IoT architecture should begin with the decision loop

Connected devices create value only when a signal reaches the right person or system in a form that supports timely action.

Connected devices create value only when a signal reaches the right person or system in a form that supports timely action.

Map the action loop first

Start with what needs to be sensed, how quickly the information must arrive, what context is required, who or what acts on it, and how the outcome is confirmed. This keeps the architecture tied to operational value.

Define telemetry and events separately

Continuous measurements, state changes and urgent events should not all be treated the same way. Clear semantics make downstream dashboards, alerts and automation easier to reason about.

Design for imperfect connectivity

Field and industrial environments often include intermittent networks, power constraints or delayed synchronisation. Buffering, retries, idempotency and local decision capability should be considered deliberately.

Separate operational and analytical needs

An operator responding to an alert needs a different experience from a manager analysing trends. Treat real-time response and longer-term insight as related but distinct product needs.

Practical checklist

  • Define the decision before the device payload.
  • Plan for offline and delayed data.
  • Make alerts actionable, not noisy.
  • Design observability across device, network and cloud layers.
